About Me

I’m the author of Moby-Duck, which is among other things—many other things—a narrative of my travels around the northern hemisphere in search of 28,800 bath toys lost at sea. I was born in San Francisco in 1972. I grew up on Mount Davidson, which is named for George Davidson. Along with the mountain I grew up on, Davidson gave his name to the sluggish current that flows north along California's coast. I've written essays and articles for Harper’s, Outside, and the New York Times Magazine, among other publications. I received the Whiting Writers' Award for nonfiction in 2008, and an NEA creative writing fellowship in 2010. I have intermittently been a magazine editor, first at Civilization (briefly great, too quickly defunct), later at Harper's, later still at GQ. I left magazines in 2012 to work on a second book. These days, after many years in New York, my wife Beth and I live in Michigan with our two boys. Beth teaches writing at UM's Ford School for Public Policy. As for me, I am now an associate professor and the coordinator of creative writing at Wayne State University in Detroit. And I am working on that second book.
